->Prison Statistics

This report provides statistics on the number of persons who were in prison, new admissions and those who were discharged from the country’s prison facilities. The information on new prisoners includes demographic characteristics, sentence status and offences characteristics.

 Prison statistics helps to inform policy development and planning in the Criminal Justice System. Prison statistics are also used for reporting on the United Nations Crime Trends Survey (UNCTS) and monitoring of Sustainable Development Goal 16.3.2. The offences are aggregated according to the United Nations International Classification of Crime for Statistical Purposes (ICCS). The information contained in this publication is based on data provided by the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Services (ZPCS).

2023 3rd Quarter Prison, Admissions and Discharges Statistics report

The total prison population is the ZPCS unlock figures, which is the total number of prisoners who slept in prisons on the night before the reporting date. As such, the total prison population is the unlock figures taken on 29 September 2023.
The total prison population in the 3
rd Quarter of 2023 was 21,619, (20,997 males and 622 females). Males thus constituted 97.1 percent of the prison population whilst women were 2.9 percent. The national imprisonment rate was 142 prisoners per 100,000 people. The imprisonment rate for males and females was 288 per 100,000 and 8 per 100,000, respectively.
