About Us

The Central Statistical Office (CSO) is the main government department responsible for the collection, processing, analysis, and dissemination of official statistics. These functions of the CSO are regulated under Statistics Act of 1971. The Statistics Act, among other things, specifies the legal responsibilities of the Director of Census and Statistics. It empowers Director of CSO:

(a)To carry out any census required to be taken in terms of the Act. Such a Census can be of the number of persons, other objects; etc.
(b) To collect, compile, analyse and abstract statistical information relating to the commercial, industrial, agricultural, mining, social, economic and general activities and conditions of the inhabitants of Zimbabwe and to publish such statistical information; and
(c) Generally to organise a co-ordinated scheme of social and economic statistics relating to Zimbabwe; etc.

Our Functions

  • advising the Government on matters related to statistical development,
  • developing and promoting use of statistical standards and appropriate methodologies,
  • collecting, compiling, analyzing, interpreting, publishing and disseminating statistical information,
  • conducting the Population Census every ten years and any other censuses and surveys.
  • fulfilling all other functions relating to statistics.
